Sandy Alomar Sr., a former Major League Baseball infielder and longtime coach, died on October 13, 2025, at age 81; the Cleveland Guardians said his family informed the team of his passing, and MLB reported he died in his native Puerto Rico. Alomar played 15 MLB seasons (1964–1978) with six teams: the Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves, New York Mets, Chicago White Sox, California Angels, New York Yankees, and Texas Rangers. He was a 1970 American League All-Star with the Angels and finished his career with a.245 average, 13 home runs, 282 RBI, and 227 stolen bases in 1,481 games. He appeared in the 1976 postseason with the Yankees and twice played 162 games in a season for the Angels (1970, 1971).
After retiring, Alomar coached across MLB, including as the San Diego Padres’ third-base coach (1986–1990) and later with the Chicago Cubs, Colorado Rockies, and New York Mets; he also managed in Puerto Rico’s Winter League and with the national team. A native of Salinas, Puerto Rico, he was the father of Baseball Hall of Famer Roberto Alomar and six-time All-Star and longtime coach Sandy Alomar Jr..
