Lenny Wilkens, a Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer as both player (1989) and coach (1998), died on Sunday, November 9, 2025, at age 88, his family said; a cause of death was not disclosed. The nine-time National Basketball Association (NBA) All-Star point guard later coached a record 2,487 NBA games and retired with 1,332 wins, guiding the Seattle SuperSonics to the 1979 championship; he is also a three-time Hall inductee, including as part of the 1992 U.S. Olympic “Dream Team” staff, and led Team USA to gold as head coach in 1996.
Wilkens’ coaching wins mark was later surpassed by Don Nelson and Gregg Popovich, but his stature endured: he was named one of the NBA’s 75 greatest players and 15 greatest coaches in 2021, and honored with a statue unveiled in Seattle on June 28, 2025. A Providence College star and 1960 No. 6 overall pick, he posted career averages of 16.5 points and 6.7 assists over 1,077 games while playing for the Hawks, SuperSonics, Cavaliers and Trail Blazers, and later coached five NBA franchises.
