No one knows. The only confirmed trace of Bitcoin’s creator is historical: on April 23, 2011, Satoshi emailed developer Mike Hearn, writing, “I’ve moved on to other things… It’s in good hands with Gavin and everyone,” and then stopped corresponding with the community. The next and last public sign widely attributed to Satoshi’s accounts came nearly three years later, when a message posted to the P2P Foundation profile on March 7, 2014 stated, “I am not Dorian Nakamoto,” after a media misidentification; the Guardian reported the post and the foundation’s email-match check at the time. There has been no verified activity or location disclosed since.
Courts have also undercut prominent identity claims. In the Crypto Open Patent Alliance (COPA) case, London’s High Court ruled in March 2024 (judgment published July 16, 2024) that Australian computer scientist Craig Wright is not Satoshi Nakamoto, finding extensive fabrication. Independent coverage summarized the ruling and its implication that Wright’s claims should not guide assumptions about Satoshi’s identity or whereabouts. In short: Satoshi’s current location remains unknown.
